Real Wood Garage Doors? Uh> No, painted metal.

An Uxbridge friend has metal garage doors,  and wanted them to look like classic wood.

After above,  before below.

Its expensive to buy real wood doors,  and they decay if not protected continually.   So why not make metal doors look like real wood?

We started out with metal doors and no frames on them,  and built the wood look with 3 colours of paint, and topped it off with clear coat.
Three colours were chosen to emulate the brick and trim that he was using on his house renovation.

The Three colours were slightly different than the colours that I used on my house (shown below).  This is due to the need to match colours in the brick and trim on each house.

The first colour added is Antique Gold,  Followed by Bronze Amulet,  Followed by Rave Raisin.   All colours are brushed on and then wood grain negative retracted in a faux finish process  that I designed on my garage doors.

You can see that the doors have the second colour going on in this picture.  This process took a total of 36 hours.
(Also notice there is no door frame currently it is simply framed in 2x 4's.)

- The process is done one panel at a time,  each panel looking unique.
- Three colours of paint were used,  with the third colour being put on twice,  to tame down the exaggeration of wood grain.
- A Spar Urethane clear coat is added at the end to ensure the doors stay beautiful and are protected from harsh rain and snow.

This picture shows the start of the faux graining with the second colour around the window frames.

Look at the side of the door and you will see the first Mahogany frame
- The mahogany is an overlay on the 2x4 frames.
- it is stained with 2 different colours to increase the depth of the wood
- Three coats of stain, increase the intensity of the colour
- Three coats of Spar Urethane,  protect the real wood frames in the winter harsh weather.

Here the door has 3 coats of paint and is waiting for the fourth.
The frame is receiving the first of 3 coats of stain.

The garage door is now completed and clear coated,  and the frames are triple stained with clear coat applied.    (The flash was too bright to show off the door in this picture.
This is the completed country home look.   Mr and Mrs. M are ecstatic that they did not have to buy real wood doors, and their friends have been complementing them already on the change in the look of their home.   Thanks guys for a fun project!   The Stone you are putting surrounding the door is already starting to look great!
