Some very good Friends of mine have an Awesome old house with 35 year old cedar doors, cedar window frames that were very .....well worn.
The Front door was painted Plum Purple and no longer suited the owners tastes. It also had some older brass hardware to go with the plum purple.
THE NEW COMMERCIAL BROWN - is DOWNTOWN.

After some discussion we decided it would be good to paint the front door with an HVLP sprayer, rather than our nice Purdy paint brushes. (which are awesome paint brushes by the way).
We removed the front door and sprayed it in the garage, and were going to do the rest of the window frames and door frames by paintbrush. After painting the front door worked so seamlessly, I thought I would dial down the air flow on the Titan Capspray airhead, and dial out the cap to bring the spray oval shape down to the size of a penny.
With these infinite controls available on the spray gun I was able to spray right alongside the caulking , within an inch of the brick and get no overspray onto the brick. The amount of overspray on the caulking was the depth of 2 or 3 mm, and had no affect, on the caulking because the caulking colour was brown in any event. So we tested spraying the frames - the front door frame first.
We ended up doing the entire door frame, by taping off the glass with green painters tape. After the glass was taped off, we could spray the frame right to the edge of the glass. The sprayer never hit the glass with any overspray on the other side of the painters tape - because the painters tape was 1.25 inches, and the overspray could not travel that far.
Occasionally Some fine white paint haze (fine atomized white cloud) did magnetically attract on the windows, but with a wipe of a paper towel and windex it was removed easily.
We also started climbing the 28 foot ladder to do the frames on the second floor which had become raw cedar over 34 years. First we had to remove a 3rd window pane which was screwed onto the exterior of the window frames for a unique 70's like look.
The upper windows started turning out pretty damn good!
This particular window got straight sun everyday on the secon story bedroom and was completely worn down with no coverage or protection any longer. We have applied 100% acrylic exterior paint from Dulux with no thinning. This adheres better with a HVLP sprayer than with a paint brush.
The first story windows had seen a lot of ware from water and sun damage. We did a fair amount of sanding to get rid of loose finish, dirt and dust, and then blew everything away with 9.5 psi airflow from the Titan hose by removing the paint gun off the end. This cleaned all the corners out and dried off the wood nicely to accept the finish. You can see in this picture there was a fair amount of ware at the bottom windows which are newly coated and ready for another harsh Barrie Winter. The caulking was done on the same day as well immediately after the paint to seal up some gaps that had arrived in the window frames. GREAT JOB!
Its extremely hard to get paint in all these crevices with a paint brush on this old of a window, but with a sprayer dialed down to a 1/2 inch spray pattern, its easy.
The window which was bare cedar is looking great now.
We even painted the red painted metal lintel above all the window frames so that it would match the rest of the window colour. BEAUTIFUL Commercial Brown.
The sheen of Satin paint after being sprayed comes out much nicer than a brush painted finish.
Now That front door looks new again, and will last much longer through harsh winters and wet rain.
Exterior acrylic is so much better now than it was 5 or 8 years ago and it stretches with the heat and cold of our Canadian climate. Our friends at Dulux Bayfield gave us a very good brand with great adhesion.

And this is the beast that applied it all. What a workhorse.
