An Old Chair is new again.

So I have always wanted to learn how to Blog,  and I thought it would be great to share some projects I do to make - old things new again.  Hence the process began.

This project started on a Tuesday morning after dropping the kids off at school, and running back home,  I saw an old, broken chair at the curb, it was sitting outside for a while and the cushion and attached pressboard seat was destroyed.

I took the old chair apart,  sanded,  and stripped it and got rid of the orange coloured stain

This is the first coat of Fumed Oak stain by my favourite Brand Goudey

And this represents the second coat of Fumed Oak.

Next I started to lay on the second colour called Classic Grey,  which is actually a Minwax stain.

You can see some of the classic grey,  barnboard style coming through here.  And I have added a Saman waterbourne satin finish on top of the two colours of stain.
During reassembly I like to use some Loctite Blue on the bolts so they do not wiggle loose again.
Reassembling the chair is really the easy part if you document where all the pieces belong.

Here you can see how the classic grey is shining through in the daylight.

I made a new seat to replace the rotten old one out of 3/8 ply.  Then Jack and I went to pick out a good fabric for the seat at Fabricland,  one that he would like for his new desk chair.
The lady at Fabricland gave me some pointers on how her good friend Domenic a professional upholster,  used to do corners so that not to many folds or puckers show on the face of the seat after completion.

I inserted some bolt sockets - toothed insert nuts into the plywood after predrilling to accept the bolts that would hold the seat firmly in place.
Here is the preassembled chair structure before attaching the seat.

I asked Jack if he would like to help with the final details of the chair and he was keen.  Learning how to use a No 3 Philips is a bit of a cool thing when you are 5.

Jack did a great job!

And he really likes his new boardroom office chair.

Not bad for a piece of rickety broken furniture found at the side of the road in the rain.   Jack is enjoying his new chair that matches the dresser we completed in the spring.  It will go nice beside the desk we are going to build for his bedroom.

Thanks for reading,  I hope you enjoyed the pictures and now you know what I do late at night when the kids are in bed sleeping!  Q107 keeps my energy going in the garage most nights.   Go Dominic Diamond!
